Overdentures
According to the Surgeon
General, 33% of adults over the age of 65 are missing one
or more teeth. Many of these people turn to dentures,
which are removable replacement teeth. However, dentures
are not always a problem-free solution.
Because dentures are removable, sometimes
they sit loosely in the mouth, and certain foods can be
off-limits. These issues can be eliminated with overdentures.
Overdentures are full dentures that are permanently supported
and stabilized to your jawbones with dental implants.
The overdenture procedure:
Creating and applying overdentures
takes about 3 stages/phased visits.
-
First, you'll meet
with one of our excellent doctors during a free initial
consultation. You can ask all your questions and express
your concerns. Our doctors will give clear answers and
together you can arrive at a plan of action.
- During the second phase, a model
of your mouth will be made. The overdenture will be created
from that model. In subsequent visits, the implants will
be placed. Several months will pass to let the jawbone grow
in around the implants, creating a sturdy foundation for
your overdenture. During this period you can wear your dentures.
- In the third phase, a connecting
device is attached to the implants and the overdenture will
attach to this.
People who have overdentures find
themselves able to enjoy many of the foods they were unable
to enjoy before - such as steak and hard apples. Overdentures
also require very little maintenance, and can be treated
basically as you would treat normal teeth.
